A little bit of history
The Mothers’ Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner. It is a worldwide organisation whose purpose is to be involved with all aspects of Christian family life.
There are five main objectives, which members support:
- To uphold Christ’s teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding.
- To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church.
- To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
- To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
- To help those whose family life has met with adversity.
Mothers’ Union at All Hallows
All Hallows’ Mothers’ Union was founded in 1920 and at present has over 50 members. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month in the small Hall at 2pm.
We also have an evening meeting on the first Thursday of the month (January, March, May, July, September and November) at Rachel Metcalf’s house at 8pm.
Our meetings always begin with a time of worship, followed by a speaker talking on a range of subjects within a framework of Christian, family and social issues.
There are also Deanery and Diocesan events and services where one can meet with members from other branches. The Mothers’ Union is a very friendly group, and we would welcome anyone interested in coming to our meetings.
We are supporters of ‘Samaritan’s Purse’, a worldwide organisation in support of all aspects of family life in many parts of the world. We give practically to their ‘Operation Christmas Child’ and have adopted this as our special project.
Shown left is a picture of our annual shoe box service, where people make up a shoe box of Christmas presents for children in the world who would otherwise have nothing.
